Berlin’s Strategy to Protect Bees and Other Pollinators

Location: Berlin

Size: citywide

Project duration: 2018 – 2019

Client: Senate Administration for Environment, Transport and Climate Protection in cooperation with the Senate Administration for Justice, Consumer Protection and Anti-Discrimination

Project type: strategy development and participation

As Berlin is an important habitat for bees and other pollinators, we developed a strategy for the Berlin Senate to make the city more bee friendly.

Together with important stakeholders, such as housing associations, allotment associations, nature conservation organisations and beekeeping groups, we identified six areas of action:

  • Promotion of biodiversity to improve living conditions for pollinators
  • Qualifications for urban beekeepers
  • Public outreach work
  • Stakeholder NetworkingE
  • Education, training and guidance
  • Research

Numerous measures have been developed to implement the bee strategy in these areas of action. This has led to greater protection of bees in urban development and maintenance of green spaces. There is greater support for biodiversity and for further training and qualifications for beekeepers. The strategy was approved by the Berlin House of Representatives in April 2019.
