What can we do to stop insect populations from declining? This question has also been raised by the Berlin Senate.

Berlin’s bee strategy is providing some initial answers. Our team has developed this strategy, which includes numerous proposed measures, such as ways to maintain urban green spaces.

Over the next few years, Hafen-Ost, the site of Flensburg’s former commercial harbour, will be transformed into a new, sustainable urban district. In cooperation with experts, local residents and other stakeholders, urban planners have developed a framework plan for regenerating the area. The waterfront city of Flensburg is rediscovering its eastern harbour.

A Sustainable Urban District for Flensburg

A heavily built-up area with high volumes of traffic and few green spaces – this is what residents in  the Badstrasse neighbourhood in Berlin’s Wedding district have to deal with every day. Together with locals, representatives from the district administration and community organisations, we addressed these problems and developed a climate adaptation strategy for the neighbourhood. We implemented the first measures in early 2022. The success of the Bellermann Garden project has not only created opportunities for community gardening but also become a green oasis in the neighbourhood.

What is allowed when a former cemetery becomes a park? With its many graves, this park still looks like a cemetery – silent and enchanted. So is it OK to play? What about sunbathing or celebrating children’s birthday parties? Along with many local residents, we developed a concept for using some areas of the St. Marien and St. Nikolai II cemetery in Berlin’s Prenzlauer Berg district. With such diverse expectations, this was not always an easy task. But in the end, everyone agreed that all the struggles for Leise Park were worth it!

In the Rhine district of Neuss, the landscape is constantly shifting due to lignite mining. We are developing an open space concept for the whole district with a focus on structural change. Working in close cooperation with local residents, the district authorities and other stakeholders, our aim is to enhance the district as a liveable region. The results have created visions for designing multifunctional open spaces and pilot projects to realise these ideas.
